Measure it, chart it, test it β€” and know the red flags.

A realistic equipment explorer and monitoring simulator for fluid status: the fluid balance chart, the measuring jug and the urinalysis dipstick. Identify them, then measure accurately, calculate the balance, test and interpret urine, and escalate red flags.

Measure β€” don't estimate, and time the dipstick (each pad is read at its set time). Measuring output, charting balance, performing urinalysis and reporting are within EN scope in consultation with the RN; interpretation guides care and abnormal results are escalated.

Education-only tool. It does not replace supervised practice, facility policy, manufacturer instructions or professional judgement, and does not guarantee any outcome. Reference ranges, urine-output thresholds and dipstick timings vary β€” always confirm against the manufacturer's instructions and local policy. Paediatric thresholds differ (weight-based).

Measuring & fluid balance

Read the jug accurately at the meniscus, record each measured value in the correct column, and let the chart total the balance. Measure β€” don't estimate.

Urinalysis dipstick

Use a fresh specimen, check the strip, dip and tap off excess, then read each pad at its set time against the colour chart. Timing is critical β€” reading too early or too late gives a false result.

Interpret & escalate

Interpretation is a guide β€” correlate clinically and escalate abnormal results and red flags. Two scenarios: an abnormal dipstick and reduced urine output. Recognise β†’ correlate β†’ escalate β†’ document.
