Know the stomas and the appliances — assess, measure, fit well, and know the red flags.

A realistic equipment explorer and stoma-care simulator: identify the stoma types, one- and two-piece systems, bags, wafers and accessories — then assess the stoma and peristomal skin, measure and cut the wafer to fit, change the appliance, monitor output and recognise the red flags.

Scope & red flag: Stoma formation is surgical (not EN scope). Stoma care — assessing, measuring, emptying, changing the appliance, peristomal skin care, monitoring output, educating and escalating — is within enrolled-nurse scope with the appropriate competency, per policy, in consultation with the RN and stomal therapy nurse (STN), to whom complex/deteriorating stomas are referred. A healthy stoma is pink/red and moist; a dusky, purple or black stoma suggests ischaemia — escalate urgently.

Education-only tool. It does not replace supervised practice, facility policy, manufacturer instructions or professional judgement, and does not guarantee any outcome. Appliance ranges, accessories, apertures and change frequencies vary — always follow the care plan, local policy, the manufacturer's instructions and the STN.

Stoma & appliance explorer — look at & learn

Tap each item to identify it and see what it does — stoma types, the stoma's colour states (healthy → dusky), peristomal skin, one- vs two-piece systems and bags, wafers with a live measure-and-cut fit check, and the accessories. Use the interact controls on each.
