Course Overview

This self-directed eLearning module provides internationally qualified nurses and healthcare workers with the essential knowledge and clinical reasoning required to safely manage medications within the Australian healthcare system.

The course aligns with NMBA Standard 3 – Maintains capability for practice and supports safe, evidence-based medication administration in accordance with Australian legislation, national safety standards, and clinical governance frameworks.

Delivered via interactive modules, learners will develop competency in medication safety, legal responsibilities, high-risk medication management, and clinical calculations required for practice in Australia.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the Australian medication regulatory framework, including the roles of the TGA and PBS in medication approval and access
  2. Apply the Australian Poisons Standard (SUSMP) to identify medication schedules and associated legal requirements
  3. Demonstrate safe handling of Schedule 8 (controlled) medications, including documentation, storage, witnessing, and escalation of discrepancies
  4. Identify and manage high-alert medications using the APINCHS framework, applying risk mitigation strategies in clinical scenarios
  5. Perform accurate medication calculations, including dosage, infusion rates, and weight-based dosing in accordance with Australian standards
  6. Apply the 11 Rights of Medication Administration, ensuring safe, patient-centred care and accurate documentation
  7. Recognise and respond to adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and complete appropriate incident and regulatory reporting
  8. Conduct medication reconciliation, including Best Possible Medication History (BPMH), across transitions of care
Assessment Requirements

To achieve certification, participants must successfully complete:

  • MCQ Knowledge Assessment (30 questions)
  • Medication Calculation Quiz (15 questions)

Participants must achieve a minimum score of 80% in BOTH components to demonstrate competency.

Assessment content is aligned with real-world clinical scenarios and Australian practice standards to ensure safe and effective application in practice.

Certification

Upon successful completion of all assessment components, participants will receive a:

Certificate of Completion – Medication Management (Australian Standards)

This certification confirms that the participant has met the required competency standards for safe medication management in accordance with Australian healthcare expectations.
